The study of medical discourse has incorporated new perspectives which derive from the integration of the input offered by other related fields such as applied linguistics, sociology, corpus linguistics or cognitive linguistics. The seminar “1st IULMA International Seminar: Discourse in Health Settings” (18/11/2014, FCHS) deals with the analysis of the discourse used in the context of health sciences and tries to cover a variety of fields to provide an interdisciplinary forum in which professional teachers and experts (both nationally and internationally) can participate. The conference deals with key topics in the investigation of medical discourse, such as, for example, the intercultural differences in doctor-patient communication, the analysis of specific linguistic and discursive features in various medical aspects or the use of literal and metaphorical language in different types of discourse.
