Piedra_Natural(English-Spanish)
Enrique Alcaraz, Brian Hughes Cunningham, José Mateo Martínez, Chelo Vargas Sierra and Adelina Gómez González-Jover

The Diccionario de Términos de la Piedra Natural [dictionary of natural stone terms] (English-Spanish, Spanish-English) is the first in the series of DICTIONARIES OF INDUSTRIAL TERMINOLOGY from the publisher Editorial Ariel. This new series tries to contribute to the standardisation, with rigorous and clear criteria, of the lexicon of this industrial world. The vast majority of lexical entries consist of four components, as can be seen in this example: foliation n: PETRO foliación; disposición en hojas –sheets– que muestran algunas rocas por la orientación de los minerales –mineral orientation–; suele denominarse esquistosidad –schistosity– cuando se trata de esquistos, pizarrosidad –slaty cleavage– en las pizarras y gneisicidad –gneissic banding– en gneis à The concentration of minerals along bands causes a gneissic structure or foliation; V. cleavage; stratification; bedding; schistosity. [Exp: foliated rock (PETRO roca foliada), foliation parallel to bedding (GEOL foliación paralela a la estratificación)]. (a) Translation of the terms, from source language into target language; (b) explanation, consisting of a brief comment explaining the meaning of the term, its limits, uses, etc.; (c) illustration or brief example preceded by the symbol à, which serves as a contextual orientation of the meaning; (d) referrals or complementary references, cross or reciprocal, preceded by V. (véase) in the first part or S. (see) in the second one, whose objective is to offer related words, which help to determine the meaning of the term and guide towards others linked to it. The goal of these four parameters is to establish the meaning of each term in the best possible manner. A varied methodology has been used, highlighting the three following moments for their importance: (a) lexicographical research of the work done so far; (b) textual analysis with corpus-based methodology for the studies of the lexical selections and the illustration of the terms through real sentences; (c) technical consultation with leading specialists from the world of natural stone (Department of Applied Petrology of the University of Alicante, Marble of Alicante, Association of the Valencian Community, Marble Technology Centre of Ceheguin, etc.). The publisher Editorial Ariel wants its Dictionary of Natural Stone Terms to facilitate the work of the students and teaching staff at the university schools of science and technology, economics and translation, as well as that of all professionals in such an innovative sector of the industry.
