Teaching British English phonetics and phonology to university students has often been based on a basic presentation and uncritical presentation of facts, as in the seminal publications by Gimson-Cuttenden, Collins & Mess, Roach, Car, etc. Despite their uncontroversial canonical presentation of the language, students may end up having an almost dogmatic opinion of English phonology, with little knowledge of other different views and perspectives. In an attempt to overcome this limitation, contributors to this volume have tried to combine theory and practice when addressing some aspects of English phonology. The result is this book, which includes a series of readings of readings that will hopefully provide students reliable and updated information on essential aspects both at a segmental and a supra-segmental level.
