Course characteristics

Over the last decades, technology has been the key for the development of new training technologies, especially concerning distance learning. In this context, the Department of English Studies of the University of Alicante, thanks to the new options offered by the Internet for distance learning, and in order to overcome the traditional variables of time and space involved in traditional teaching, offers its course entitled UNIVERSITY EXPERT.

Course details:

  • The course is taught on line through the learning platform (virtual campus) of the University of Alicante.
  • The sessions are based on learning resources developed by the organizers, consisting of both written material (the book “El inglés jurídico” by Enrique Alcaraz Varó and the English-Spanish legal dictionary by Alcaraz and Hughes, which will be sent to all students) and online material (study guide with vocabulary exercises and translations, with footnotes and suggestions for translation).

Learning objectives and course content

The general purpose of the Course in English-Spanish Legal Translation is providing theoretical and practical training in legal translation from English into Spanish for graduates in English Studies, Modern Languages, or other university degrees (provided they possess sufficient knowledge of both English and Spanish).

The specific objectives are:

  • Acquiring a basic knowledge of the English legal system and the main problems in legal translation;
  • Analyzing the main legal genres (judgments, contracts, statutes…);
  • Practicing the main translation strategies;
  • Translating medium- and high-difficulty legal texts in English into Spanish.

Contents of the course

The syllabus for the “Expert” diploma is the following (20 ECTS credits):

  • Unit 1: An introduction to translation and legal translation
  • Unit 2: The language, organization and administration of English justice
  • Unit 3: The language of criminal and civil procedure
  • Unit 4: The language of contract law
  • Unit 5: The language of Company law and Arbitration law
  • Unit 6: The language of Inheritance law, divorce and Insurance law
  • Unit 7: The language of EU law. Lawyers and representation before the courts

Admission to the course

The course is open to:

  • Persons meeting the requirements for access to official university studies within the European Higher Education Area.
  • Possessing a certificate proving a level or B2 (or equivalent) according to the European Reference Framework)
  • For those persons not holding an official certificate, it will be possible to hold an oral interview via Skype.

Methodology and infrastructure

  • Individual attention through one of the tutors of the course, and direct and permanent communication with the course administrators, the webmaster and the course coordinator.
  • Digital platform restricted to students and teachers in the course, with learning materials, self-assessment exercises, discussion forums and debates moderated by the coordinator.
  • As for computing equipment, the only requirement at home is a computer with Windows XP or higher, a standard Internet connection and Internet Explorer 8.0 or higher. There is no need for special software, or a high-speed Internet connection.


The assessment of the compulsory module (Introduction and translation of UK law) will be as follows: 40% through assessment tests sent to the tutor through the year, and 60% in a face-to-face written examination.

Examinations to be sent online (40% of the compulsory module):

For each of the nine modules, an obligatory assessment test must be made and sent within the 15 days following the end of each unit.

A re-sit period will be available for these tests, during the first two weeks of June, in the following cases:

  1. Students who fail to submit up to three tests within the established deadlines.
  2. Students who have not obtained a pass mark (50%) in up to three tests submitted and wish to improve their average.

In both cases, the student may continue submitting the remaining tests and continue with the course as usual, but if the re-sit period is not successfully used, the final mark for the course shall be based at 100% on the written, final examination.

Face-to-face written examination (60% of the compulsory module):

During the last week of June 2016, a written examination shall take place at the University of Alicante, the date to be announced in advance, although there may be a possibility to sit such examination in other cities (Madrid) or in consular facilities in other countries.

Course data

Each ECTS credit is equivalent to 25 hours student workload.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In order to complete the course, an average student must devote an equivalent to 250 hours of individual work and study, equivalent to 15 hours a week.

  • Short curriculum vitae (maximum of two pages)

Additional registration requirements:

The Centro de Formación Contínua may request from the student additional documents proving the validity of the data supplied by the students, including the legalization of documents issued abroad.

Student admission procedure

Each year 40 places shall be available.

In order to select candidates, a maximum of 7 shall be awarded based on the academic record, up to 2 points based on the student’s curriculum vitae, and up to 1 point depending on the students’ command of  English.
